The Thing About Mother’s Day…
I always have mixed emotions about Mother’s Day; not because I feel we shouldn’t set apart a day to show gratitude and dare I say, serve our mothers. I have mixed emotions because first, not every woman IS a mother, second, not everyone had a great experience regarding their mother, and third, shouldn’t we honor the women God used to bring us life EVERY day? So from a ministerial perspective, how should one reconcile all these issues in a sermon or a message without taking some section of scripture completely out of context?
I am 39 years old at this writing. So, I feel very confident in saying that I have attended at least 35 church services set aside to honor mothers on Mother’s Day! I remember my MawMaw Sharp receiving the award for OLDEST mother year after year. That’s how a woman wants to be honored in front of a room full of people right? “Tell everybody how old you are Maudie!” Geez…
I once heard a former pastor explain how he wanted to shake things up at his first church, and decided against recognizing the oldest and the youngest mothers (which can be equally embarrassing for the teenage girl who despite social stigma decided to keep her baby). Instead, the young pastor decided to give a special corsage to the mother that had experienced the longest labor! Good times.
Once upon a time, living in Longview Texas and attending a great church there, we were part of a Sunday school class of young couples. During this time we found out that Malinda was pregnant with our first child, Bailey. We were, I believe, the third couple from that class to “drink the water” that year. If I remember correctly there were five total. Another set of newlyweds who were both college educated, working good jobs, and much more financially stable than we were also were praying for a baby…to no avail. I remember this couple attending all the baby showers bearing gifts. They never acted hurt or offended every time another couple would announce a “praise” of a new one on the way. They came to every birth with the rest of the class, even ours. I remember her holding other young ladies pride and joys while he stood behind, leaning over and cooing back at the tightly wrapped bundles. Mother’s Day changed for me that year.
Of course Mother’s Day would change. After all, my wife was a mother now. But, I will never forget how difficult it must have been for what seemed like, the only couple in class not to have a baby. In fact, this story seems to always be hovering over my head every year as a reminder of those who have prayed and prayed, only to find disappointment. Enter the story of Hannah….
“And Hannah prayed….” – 1 Samuel 2:1
I love the story of Hannah, not because it seems to have a “happy ending,” but because it speaks to me, even though I’m not a mother, and even though I’m not a woman at all. I’ve heard (and preached) this story from the perspective of commitment. I’ve heard this story preached from the perspective of perseverance. The other day I was reading and came across verse 1 chapter 2 of 1st Samuel and it hit me – “And Hannah prayed…”
A young woman has a husband. In her culture she has to share a husband, but he loves her more than his other wife and let’s her know it! In our culture that may sound pretty messed up. I wonder how many women in our culture who DON’T have to share a husband wish he would go the extra mile to let her know he loves her. Just a thought. So, she’s the favorite, and one would expect the “other” woman to be the woman scorned. Instead, the other woman is actually bearing children left and right, and Hannah is bearing none. Similar to our culture, a woman’s worth was measured in her ability to provide children….sons specifically. And Hannah prayed….
Not only did the “other” woman provide Hannah’s husband with heirs, she also made Hannah’s life a living Hell by “provoking her grievously” (1:6). Hannah’s pain over the issue became so great that the Bible says she would even cry and not eat! Here is where I find myself beginning to relate to Hannah. Not because I have to “share a man” of course. Not because I don’t have children, I do. Have you ever wanted something so badly? Have you ever been so sick over either the loss of something, or perhaps the never gaining of it, whatever it is, that you literally wept and couldn’t even bring yourself to eat? I like Hannah, have…..and Hannah prayed….
I’m not going to focus on the part of the story where Hannah promises the Lord she will give her child to the service of the Lord, if He will only grant her request and end her barrenness. Of course the Lord heard her, and the Lord answered her, and gave her a son, Samuel. I’m not going to focus on the part where after the child was weaned, Hannah took him and did as she promised, and literally GAVE the child to the prophet Eli to raise serving the Lord. The thing I can’t get out of my head is that Hannah did not know if the Lord would ever answer her prayer. But Hannah prayed.
Hannah prayed when she had no reason to believe God would ever give her a child. Hannah prayed and thanked God when He did. We live in a fickle world. Sometimes we only pray when we’re so sick we can’t eat. And sometimes when we finally get what we wanted we actually forget to pray a prayer of thanksgiving to the One who gave it. Sometimes we pray thanking God when great things happen in our lives. And sometimes we curse and blame God for every terrible thing that crosses our existence! For all Hannah knew, she would never bear a child, but she prayed anyway. Would she have been heartbroken had God never answered? Certainly!
Hannah prayed when it was bad, and she prayed when it was good. Hannah had a pretty messed up home life, and Hannah prayed. Hannah doubted her worth, and Hannah prayed. Hannah had a family member terrorize her by having a bunch of kids that I’m certain she probably had to help feed and change! And Hannah prayed. It wasn’t such a stretch for Hannah to praise the Lord in the victory, when she had prayed to the Lord in the battle!

The Lion and the Mouse
I was studying the other day and my two year old was demanding my time. “Daddy…..Daddy….Daddy…..Daddy…..” I love my son and am very happy that he finds me interesting enough to want my attention, but I really needed to study. I actually considered killing two birds with one stone. If I put him on my lap and read aloud David Garland’s commentary of Mark chapter 4, only with a lot of vocal inflections, the boy wouldn’t distinguish it from Mother Goose……would he? The thought made me feel guilty, so I put the book down and picked the boy up, remembering all the times my mother, and grandmothers took time to read to me. I don’t remember hearing any commentaries during those times on the front porch. I do remember a lot of songs (“Turn Around, Turn Around” still makes me cry), and a lot of stories….stories with a moral.
Do you remember the story about the lion with a thorn in his paw? I’m not exactly sure how it goes, but there’s something about a lion that shows mercy on a mouse because killing a mouse is actually beneath a lion, the king of the jungle. Later, the same lion is afflicted with a thorn in his paw, causing incredible pain. The mouse from earlier in the tale, with his small teeth, is able to draw the thorn from the lion’s paw, enabling said lion to carry on his royal duties. I was thinking about that lion while I was studying Mark chapter 4; not so much the lion, as the thorn.
Jesus tells a story about a farmer who goes scattering seed. Some seed gets snatched up by birds and never becomes fruitful. Some seed lands on rocky ground, gets scorched by the sun and dies. Some seed falls among (you guessed it) thorns and takes root and grows, but never becomes fruitful because that seeds fruit is choked out because of the thorns. And some seed falls on good soil and becomes fruitful. Four different consequences from seed sown by the same farmer, and I can’t quit thinking about the thorns.
Everyone who grew up like me, in the 80’s knows all about thorns. I mean, every rose has one right? But when I read this story about the various seed and the end result of each, I find myself relating more to the thorny seed than the fruitful seed. I don’t know about you, and certainly cannot speak for you, but I never consider myself fruitful, or at least, fruitful “enough.” According to Jesus, if the seed planted comes up but doesn’t bear fruit, it’s because of the thorns. So, I ask myself, “What are my thorns?”
Jesus lists three types of “thorns” that choke out the seed (Jesus also said the seed is the word): – worldly cares, believing money is the answer, and wanting things other than being fruitful. I can say with certainty, that I have been guilty at different times of all three! But….haven’t we all?
I had a meeting early this week with a local missions guy. One of the topics discussed was how churches are sometimes threatened when another church is rumored to be starting in the same vicinity. People may even say “We don’t need new churches, we just need to build up the ones we already have!” Are we though? And if not…. why not? Could it be the thorns? Could it be that the majority of people who call themselves Christians are actually not being fruitful because they’re too worried about their own personal lives, or too busy chasing the almighty dollar, or just simply want to do anything but what it takes to be fruitful?
The story of the lion and the mouse are certainly not the same story as the sower and the seed. In fact, I only really see one glaring similarity, thorns incapacitate. Thorns stop lions in their tracks, and thorns choke out fruit. Jesus said the fruitful seed fell on good soil, and the unfruitful fell among the thorns. The thing I find interesting…..the question that I want to ask, is “aren’t thorns present wherever seed is sown?” Isn’t the cares of the world, and the temptation to chase the dollar, and the desire to live my own life in my own way, doing the things I want to do when I want to do them and HOW I want to do them, always possibilities? Dare I say temptations? What then is the difference? What makes for good soil?
Is It Lunch Time?
“Is it time to eat yet?” I used to bug my mother with this question constantly. My 13 going on 30 year old daughter Bailey has exchanged that question for the more common “Do we have anything to eat?” She often asks this question while munching a bag of chips….or a poptart…..or a bowl of cereal, typically after school and before “supper time,” or the “between time…..”
Last Sunday night, as a family, we watched Secret Millionaire. I’ve really come to love this type of giving back to the community and people caring about other people shows. In Secret Millionaire, a wealthy individual goes to a more impoverished section of an American city, and volunteers for a week at various charity organizations, looking for causes and people that he/she can bless with literally thousands of dollars at the end of the program.
Of course, money is not the answer to every problem poor people and non-profit companies face. I guess….. I mean, have we really tried to give thousands of dollars to anybody, just to test it…..? I digress…..
At one point in the program, a mother displaced by domestic violence, finds herself homeless and living at a shelter for others in similar circumstance, said something that rang in our ears. “Me and my daughter were so scared when we first had to come to a shelter, but my daughter said ‘Mommy, at least we’re not sleeping on the street anymore.’” Wow!
While that show was on, our kids were trying to choose from three different things they could have for supper that night…..all leftovers. God had provided so much for our family the last three meals, that we could keep eating it for later meals!
In the Bible, there’s an interesting section in Matthew 9:9-17 that talks about Jesus and meals. In one part, He’s eating with “tax collectors and sinners” (9:11), and in another part He’s eating instead of fasting (9:14). The former issue is a problem for the super-religious Pharisees, and the latter issue is a question raised by the disciples of John. One issue was about WHO Jesus eats with, and the second was THAT Jesus was eating. I guess the disciples of John felt the best way to curtail the whole problem of eating with sinners, was to just not eat! Problem solved!
Jesus dealt with each issue separately of course. First He tells the Pharisees that eating with people like Matthew the tax collector and all his “sinner” friends, is exactly why He is there, because they need it…..because they need Him! “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” (9:12). Next, He deals with the question of fasting by pointing out that people don’t mourn and fast while the bridegroom (Jesus) is present. I mean, who doesn’t eat at a wedding right? He also points out that trying to force new things into old forms doesn’t work – “No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment….neither is new wine put into old wineskins” (9:16-17). So, where does this leave us, and how does it apply to our lives?
I grew up ‘in church.” I’ve been to more church related dinners and covered dish events than I could even begin to count. I’ve eaten more green bean casserole, and Mexican chicken than should be legally allowed. Most churches do not struggle with feeding…..themselves. Don’t misunderstand me, I believe churches should fellowship one with another. We need each other, more than we even realize, I think. What about the tax collectors and sinners? Isn’t it time we started eating with them? I mean, like Jesus did?
In the American economy where we complain about gas prices going to $4.00 a gallon, and people having to work sometimes three incomes per family, I still have leftovers in the fridge. If I need shoes, I may have to move money around, but I buy them. And people are hungry, people that aren’t “church people.”
Matthew’s friends came over to eat a meal because it was time for a meal, yes. While they were there, they got to meet Jesus. People are hungry. People need to be fed, and we have leftovers. And people are hungry spiritually……
